Secret Connections: What are we to make of the Celtic gods? Archetypes from the collective unconscious? Fairy tales? Deities? And if we can accept the substance of angels, what of beings like Cernunnos, Lord of the Secret Forest, intercessor between the world of men and the kingdom of the animals? Real, imagined, or in between, one suspects the Celtic gods bestowed blessings upon those who came to them.
But a day arrived when the Old Way, the Way-of-the-many-gods, grew thin, and the Son of Man came, calling the folk to turn from the multitude to the Creator of the multitude. Neither the schooling nor the learning nor the magic mysteries of the Druids could prevail. The old beliefs retired, like Cernunnos, into the forest deep. And waited.
Yet to all things there is a fullness and a falling. In time, the way of the glorious One begat spiritual pride, leading to arrogance and putting all life on earth at danger. Now the Old Ways awaken, calling us to recall old forgotten friendships with the chirping, snorting, spirit-haunted natural world.
In the hour of need old adversaries may find common cause. Here, Cernunnos watches from the shadows while one of the Angelic host displays his alert gaze and greenish mantle, hinting at secret connections between the powers.
May we dwell in harmony with the Many and never lose sight of the One.
